I'm back!!!  Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted.   But you haven't been far from my mind, fastrunningblog!!!

I had a baby in 2008, and another baby in 2009, and this year, 2010, is again the YEAR OF THE MARATHON!  Wa-hoooo!

How has everyone been?

It's good to see you back! Wow..two babies in a row..I can definitely relate with that. I'm doing good. Just trying to keep my head above water with all these kiddos. It's been fun!!

What beautiful weather, and a beautiful run.  I ran into a friend on the road who mentioned a church running group that is training for a regional 5k next month.  I think I might just join in the fun! It is so nice to not have to bundle up to go running anymore.  Happy Spring!

P.S. I have to say I am so grateful for this blog and Sasha's expert advice.  I'm looking forward to what this year has in store. :)

In Baltimore!  Ben wanted to fly out for a conference, and it happened to coincide with our 10 year anniversary, so I came along with our youngest.

Ran 3 miles on a treadmill at the hotel.  Tried to go faster for a while to make it more interesting.  I did meet an elite athlete in the elevator afterward.  She had been running in the pool to avoid pounding on her joints.  It's just inspiring to meet people like that.

Enjoyed another treadmill run as much as I could.  I'd really prefer to run outside, but I like to get into my "zone" so I prefer not to have to dodge through people to run, so I chose the treadmilll again.

Didn't run, but wish I did.  Felt like sleeping forever to recover from the whirlwind trip.  I thought that it would be relaxing, and it was some, but still mucho trabajo with a teensy one on a plane for 4 hours, etc.  Things actually went really well considering.

We did enjoy some beautiful weather in Baltimore, and a trip out to the Washington DC temple to celebrate our 10th anniversary.  It's good to be home.

Four days in a row!  I don't know how long it's been since I did that.  I feel like I am establishing the habit of getting up and running.  It feels very good.  My brain is even functioning better during the day!

I can also feel a mental shift from "I can't" to "I can" occurring.

I used to be in the habit of feeling that I couldn't do certain things because I have lots of little ones, and I don't get much sleep.  I'm exercising faith and I'm enjoying what is happening! Here's to more of these great days!

Good progress.

Here are my thoughts on energy. An overweight lady that cannot break 16:00 in the mile fresh can find the energy to get things done. If they asked you to run one more mile at the end of your run as fast as you could, it would probably be no slower than 9:00. So the energy is there if needed.

However, what is happening is that the body wants to take a short break to rebuild so that it does not break down. You need to let it get that break. Maybe lay down for 30 minutes. Have faith that the house will still stand when you get up, and your day as well as your next run will go a whole lot better.

From Virginia on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 18:26:29 from 67.207.39.55

Thanks, Sasha. That is excellent advice for me. I need to learn to take breaks, and trust that the house will stand, and I'll wake up to find 5 boys alive. :)

You reminded me of some favorite words from Brigham Young:

"Instead of doing two days’ work in one day, wisdom would dictate to [the Saints], that if they desire long life and good health, they must, after sufficient exertion, allow the body to rest before it is entirely exhausted. When exhausted, some argue that they need stimulants in the shape of tea, coffee, spirituous liquors, tobacco, or some of those narcotic substances which are often taken to goad on the lagging powers to greater exertions. But instead of these kind of stimulants they should recruit by rest. Work less, wear less, eat less, and we shall be a great deal wiser, healthier, and wealthier people than by taking the course we now do."

A new week!  I had a great run this morning.  It was windy, but I was glad to be out in it.  I am looking forward to increasing my mileage this week.

The other day I was admiring my almost 6 month old baby.  He is so beautiful.  He is the picture of perfect health.  And then it dawned on me that that sweet baby has the perfect nutrition, created by the Creator of us all.  And then my next thought was to wonder about how I could have such perfect health.  Ta-da!  By eating the foods that the Creator created for me to eat.  Whole foods.  I'm thrilled by this concept.  Now I'm working on eating more whole foods and less packaged foods.

I also just finished reading a book my little brother recommended, In Defense of Food.  It was very good, and good timing for me to read.  Here's to better health this year!

Ran four miles today!  Really enjoyed the run.  The day goes so  much better when it starts with a run.  Ben noticed that the two days I didn't run I just wasn't so happy.  I laugh in the face of chaos if I've had a run.

Ugh!  No run again today.  Couldn't muster it.  The six month old babe was up screaming his sweet little heart out in the night, many times.  Just as he was settled it seemed he would awake again.  Tried simethicone drops and infant tylenol.  Just when it occurred to me that Ben could give him a blessing, the most beautiful baby in the world finally drifted off to sleep, but it was already five this morning!  Poor fella.

This morning I found just a sliver of glimmer of white under his baby gums.  Maybe that's what caused all his sadness.  I don't remember teething being so hard for all the other guys!

The exciting news is I just checked and I'm in for the St. George Marathon!  Wa-hooo!  I haven't ran that course since 1999!

Side note:  I've had a very close relationship with sweets it seems for the last few years.  It dawned on me the other day that I haven't fasted much during that time because I don't fast while I am bearing or nourishing babies.  So my self-restraint and self-mastery skills have gotten rusty.  So, I took it upon myself to have a retraining  period of a week to see if I could bridle this passion.  Sure enough, it's going great.  And the more I bridle it, the easier it is to do it.  Now that is sweet!  It will be a week on Sunday and no treats have touched my lips!  The Bishop even offered me some the other night, and so did my little brother!  The next challenge is to figure out what I will do once the week of retraining is up.  Continue to abstain from chocolate and all things emerging from the oven with wafting tendrils of aromatic splendor?  Perhaps!

A member of the bishopric called to ask if I could speak in Sacrament Meeting in a week and a half on "Teaching with the Spirit."  I think when things like that happen it means that I need to learn more on that subject!  And I do.  I have five little boys, and it looks  like I am going to start homeschooling this fall.  :)

I just went to a farewell for a young man in one of my previous wards. He sang at the end. It wasn't spontaneous, though. Premeditated. :)

My wife and I had to speak 3 weeks ago in our new ward. I had the stake president sitting right behind me. Thanks a lot Bishop!

We went to the Castle Valley Pageant last night.  It was awesome!  A couple of my nephews and one niece were in it.  The boys had a lot of fun running around in the dust with their cousins and learning cool pioneer stuff.  I would highly recommend it if you haven't been!  It is just this week and next.

So I didn't get much sleep, but what I did get was great.  Only woke up once or twice with the baby.

Started the run later than usual, so it was warm, but felt good.  A couple miles up the canyon I saw a little old lady hitting her water bottle on a rock, so I stopped to check on her.  She was trying to break up the ice in her bottle -- she didn't have any water left.  She didn't seem very coherent, but she did let me take her bottle and squirt some Gatorade into it.   As soon as my iPhone would work I called police dispatch to see if they could check on her.  She had a crack on the side of her mouth and she was heading up the canyon where there was no potable water.  I was relieved to see an officer drive by just a few minutes later.  Whew.

A pretty little deer with big ears also let me take a few pictures of her.  So many reasons to love long runs!  Pace wasn't lickity split, but I did work on it, parts averaging in the 11:00 range again.

I hit the wall this morning.  And not the running wall.  Just the everything wall.  Too many nights of less than 5 hours of sleep (counting wakings), worn down from taking care of the 5 little bouncing boys I love.  My husband was out later doing missionary work last night after his work day, and then I stayed up to get some housework done.  Then at 5 a.m. when my alarm went off I could see lightening lighting up the backyard again and again, and I thought, this must be the morning I don't run.

But that's okay.  Marathon training is like that for me.  I do what I can to prepare, and on race day, I line up and see what I have.  Sometimes I wonder if Boston is too lofty of a goal for me at this time in my life.  But then I tell myself, no goal is too lofty.  I might not nail it this year, but someday...  The Lord knows what's in me.  He keeps encouraging me, so I keep trying. :)

Hi there! I'm not sure if we've ever "met" here on the blog before. It looks like you are running SGM this year, right?

I noticed your entry a few days ago about hitting the "everything" wall. Not that I'm glad you hit it, but I'm glad I'm not the only one to hit that kind of wall! Sometimes we just need a minute or two or lots more to just relax and enjoy things like 5 fun little boys! That is cool you are a mom of 5 boys! That right there is a huge workout each day....I know how little boys are! Anyway, it was nice to come upon your blog. I'll stop by again. Have a good day.

Yup! I'm runnin' SGM this year. It is my 3rd marathon. I'm hoping to be able to do it without knee problems this year...so far knees, (ITB), have caused me more greif than I would like in the marathon. My hubby is running with me and training with me this year. He is usually an hour faster than me. It's been fun to have a built in running partner and coach. Hopefully our aproach to this year's marathon will be the ticket. What do you need to BQ? I need 3:50 this year but next year I'll only need 4:00. :)

Ah, the sweetness of a new day.  Ran 8 miles, had scripture and prayer with beautiful boys, made (or revised) a couple lunches, kissed heads and bid them farewell for the day, changed a few diapers, and now I can think about a shower.

I'm homeschooling!  Just one of them.  He is at a history camp today, though, so this is an easy way to start.  Now to tackle the day, and try and get some organization underway.  I am grateful, so ever grateful for the gift of running.

Nice long run today!  Towards the end of the run I decided to just run really fast and then pull my gps out and see how fast it was for fun.  It was 6:47 min/mil pace!  The rest were closer to 12?!

It's hard to believe the marathon is just on the very next page of my calendar.  I'm pretty excited.  But I've come to accept that this won't be my fastest marathon ever like I had hoped.  There is just only so much I can do on little sleep.  But I am going to have fun!
